Media, Pa – Following union ratification of the agreement, Congressman Joe Sestak (PA-07) affirmed his support of the deal reached today between ACME and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776:
“I am pleased that an agreement has been reached between ACME and UFCW Local 1776,” said Congressman Sestak. “For the past few weeks, I have been engaged with the two sides to encourage a positive effort to reach a collectively bargained agreement. I appreciate the long, late hours dedicated by union and ACME leadership to secure a fair agreement for both sides. The men and women of UFCW 1776 can now continue to serve the hundreds of thousands of loyal customers in this region who have come to trust and respect the ACME brand for well over a century. I expect this contract to set the stage for new growth in that proud corporation. The process of negotiating a new contract is challenging, especially during these difficult and uncertain economic times. ACME and UFCW Local 1776 are to be commended for remaining at the bargaining table to reach a solution in the best interests of all concerned.
“As we fight through this economic storm, the survival of innumerable businesses and countless middle class Americans is at risk. Every business and employee must keep faith with one another as we are all in this together.”
Born and raised in Delaware County, former 3-star Admiral Joe Sestak served in the Navy for 31 years and now serves as the Representative from the 7th District of Pennsylvania. He led a series of operational commands at sea, including Commander of an aircraft carrier battle group of 30 U.S. and allied ships with over 15,000 sailors and 100 aircraft that conducted operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. After 9/11, Joe was the first Director of "Deep Blue,” the Navy's anti-terrorism unit that established strategic and operations policies for the "Global War on Terrorism." He served as President Clinton's Director for Defense Policy at the National Security Council in the White House, and holds a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. According to the office of the House Historian, Joe is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
